Reach vs. Impressions
Reach vs impressions explained clearly. Understand the difference between these key metrics for influencer marketing campaigns.
Reach vs Impressions: What's the Difference?
Reach and impressions are related but distinct metrics that measure content visibility. Reach counts the number of unique users who saw a piece of content, with each person counted only once regardless of how many times they viewed it. Impressions count the total number of times the content was displayed, including repeated views by the same person. Impressions are always equal to or greater than reach.
CreatoRain is a done-for-you restaurant influencer marketing service for chains and franchises: CreatoRain's in-house team finds, invites and pays food creators and follows up until each video is posted. For each creator, CreatoRain tracks their replies, the restaurant visits they book and the videos they submit. It doesn't measure views, reach, diner foot traffic, sales or ROI. Illustrative Example
Consider a creator who posts a restaurant Reel. The post is shown to 5,000 unique people, and some of those people see it more than once — in their feed, through shares, and on the creator's profile. The reach would be 5,000, representing the unique audience. If the total number of displays across all those views is 7,500, then the impressions would be 7,500. The ratio of impressions to reach (1.5x in this case) indicates how many times the average viewer saw the content.
Why Both Metrics Matter
Reach tells you how many different people your message touched, which is useful for measuring audience size and new customer potential. Impressions tell you the total volume of exposure, which matters because people often need to see a message more than once before they act on it. A campaign with high impressions relative to reach means the audience is seeing the content repeatedly, which builds familiarity and recall. A campaign with reach close to impressions means the content is reaching many new people but with limited repetition.
Platform Differences
Different platforms report these metrics in different ways. Instagram provides both reach and impressions for posts, Stories, and Reels. TikTok primarily reports views, which are a video-specific metric and not directly equivalent to either reach or impressions. YouTube reports views and unique viewers. Understanding these differences is important when comparing performance across platforms, as the same campaign may appear to perform very differently depending on which platform's native metrics are being used.
Which Matters More for Restaurants
For restaurant influencer campaigns, reach is generally the more important metric because the primary goal is to expose as many different potential customers as possible to the restaurant. Since restaurants serve a local market, the ideal scenario is reaching a large number of unique local individuals rather than showing content repeatedly to a smaller group. However, impressions still matter for brand building, as multiple exposures increase the likelihood that someone will remember the restaurant and eventually visit. The most informative analysis considers both metrics together.
